The personal columns of old newspapers are full of cryptic half-stories, ‘what ifs?’ and jumping-off points for the imagination. This workshop will help you create and develop characters and stories using real-life adverts and other historical documents as prompts. Tickets here.

To celebrate the publication of The Companion in paperback this month, I will be at the gorgeous new Halifax Central Library on the evening of Thursday 30th November.

I will be talking about the inspirations behind the novel, my writing process and my experience so far as a debut novelist. Also happy to talk about my day job as a TV quiz question setter if folk are interested.

A panel discussion about book publicity and self-promotion

I am excited to be taking part in this festival this year. On Friday evening I will be a member of the panel for the event discussing the dos and don’ts of book publicity and self promotion. My fellow panellist is the author Helen Taylor and the event is chaired by Laurie Garrison, founder of the Women’s Writers School.
